My Favorite Scripture Story

There are many great stories in the the scriptures, but my favorite is the story of Nephi's broken bow from 1 Nephi 16. My theory for why I like it so much is because growing up in Utah my parents had what basically amounted to a comic book version of this story and that was one of the first things that I remember reading on my own. Now there is a version of it that the church has put out on Youtube.

As I have grown older I still have a soft spot for this story. I still love Nephi's example in this story about him being willing to remain faithful to the Lord in spite of the fact that everyone else around him murmuring. One thing that has always stuck with me is how Nephi approached this challenge. Instead of complaining like everyone else he chose to look for a solution to the problem. He made a new bow and went to his ask the Lord through his father Lehi where he should go to find food to hunt.

This lesson has helped me in my life to remember that when I encounter adversity that I can choose to complain about the problem, or I can choose to deal with it and look for solutions. As we choose to follow Nephi's example and make efforts towards solutions to our problems and involve the Lord the enabling power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ will help us to overcome the challenges that life presents us.

P.S. For more on the enabling power of the Atonement I recommend this talk by Elder Bednar:
